South Africa – Zaagkuilsdrift Road & Kgomo-Kgomo floodplain [2]

Atlasville, 26 Mar 2006

Well it only took 2 weeks to get back for another day birding the Zaagkuilsdrift road and Kgomo-Kgomo wetland. Just for variety I approached from the west this time starting in the Kgomo-Kgomo area and working my way back along the Zaagkuilsdrift road.

Some of the better photos of the day were of Village Indigobird, Pied Crow, Yellow-billed Stork, Squacco Heron, Crowned Lapwing, Scaly-feathered Weaver and Brown-crowned Tchagra. Although today’s trip list only reached 85, there were surprisingly 22 that had not been seen on the first trip, most of them quite common birds. So 130 over the two days is quite a good tally.

There had been quite a bit of rain in the past few days and this led to an abundance of butterflies swarming around the margins of the puddles on the road. I was able to get photos of Common Orange Tip, Lemon Tip, Dark Blue Pansy, Brown-veined White and Zebra White.
