Atlasville – 6 June 2008
I finally took the plunge and upgraded my Canon EOS 20D. The camera of choice is the EOS 40D. So off to the Kruger Park for the weekend 31 May -1 June where I put the new camera through its paces.
Although based at Ngwenya Lodge just outside Crocodile Bridge Gate I did no birding at all at Ngwenya, spending all the available time in the Kruger Park itself.
While I may just be trying to convince myself that the purchase of the new camera was worth it I firmly believe that the bigger sensor and the Digic III processor give a crispness and clarity to the images that I could not achieve with the 20D. Let the images speak for themselves.
On both days in the Park I stayed largely within the triangle of Crocodile Bridge-Skukuza-Tshokwane. Those birds that I was able to get decent photos of were Grey Go-away-bird, Three-banded Plover, Greater Blue-eared Starling, Brown Snake Eagle, Pearl-spotted Owlet, Black-crowned Tchagra, Lilac-breasted Roller, Purple Roller, Magpie Shrike, Sabota Lark, African Woolly-necked Stork, African Fish Eagle, Fiscal Flycatcher, Burchell’s Starling, Arrow-marked Babbler, Goliath Heron, African Hawk-Eagle and Swainson’s Spurfowl. One interesting sighting that unfortunately would not sit still for a photo was my only my 3rd ever and 1st Kruger Park Grey Penduline Tit.
On the non-bird front I got photos of 2 rather cute African Bush Elephant calves and a Rough-scaled Plated Lizard.
